How many of you leave your back door open when you go out? Not many I bet.
How many of you leave a notice in your front window, letting people know you’re not in? About the same amount, I’d guess.
There has been much in the news recently highlighting the danger of social networking sites and the ease with which information can be picked up and passed on.
How many of you post onto social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, Twitter)? Quite a few of you.
How many of you post onto a social network site when you’re going out (e.g. to the cinema, or to visit friends etc.)? Again quite a few of you.
Take that a step further:
How many of you post onto business networking sites (e. Linked in)?
How many of you make it clear on your out of office message, that you are on annual leave for a number of days?
Did you know that there is a website (www.pleaserobme.com) that monitors social networking sites, and lets everybody know when you are out. They claim that it’s to raise awareness of “online privacy issues”.
Perhaps you ought to think twice next time you tell the world that you are going to visit Aunt Agatha in Dorset, and you won’t be back for a couple of days – you might find a surprise waiting for you when you get back.
